House insurance

Protect your home and family with comprehensive house insurance.

“Home is where the heart is.” It’s one of the most well-known sayings, and for good reason. Home is where most of us feel the safest and most welcome. That’s why it is critical to protect your home from the myriad risks, both natural and manmade, that can occur over time. What is covered under a home insurance policy differs between insurance providers, but may include the following coverage.

Cover for Damage to Your Home

A good home insurance policy will provide you with coverage in the event that your home sustains damage due to natural or human means. Natural causes of damage could include damaging winds, severe storms, rain/water damage, hail damage, etc.

Some insurers may have exclusions as to what falls under natural damage for default policies, so it’s possible certain forms of natural damage may need to be covered via insurable add-ons. Common perils or natural dangers that are usually not insured by default can include flood damage, damage caused from earthquakes and landslides, and pest damage.

Human-caused damage could include damage that occurs from vandalism, breaking and entering, arson, and other similar incidents. Again, what is or isn’t covered under a basic home insurance policy may differ between insurance providers.

Theft of or Damage to Personal Belongings

Be aware that personal belongings (aka personal property) are treated differently to exterior or interior damage to your actual home. Similarly, basic home insurance coverage and what personal belongings it covers will depend on your insurer. Most insurance providers will cover almost any of your belongings, but this will likely require that you take out additional policies.

Basic belongings could include:

  • Kitchenware such as your fridge, dishwasher, cutlery and dishes, etc.
  • Personal computer, laptops, tablets, smart phones, consoles, etc.
  • Furniture
  • Linen and clothing
  • Lights and fans

Other belongings may only be covered when you sign on for additional policies. These may include:

  • Jewellery, gems, watches, and other high value personal belongings
  • Furs
  • Fine arts and antiquities
  • Personal works such as manuscripts
  • Personal collections such as coin, stamp, and card collections

Most home insurance policies will also include a liability portion to the cover. This portion covers you in the event that a third party sustains an injury on your property and holds you liable. For example, if a visitor happened to slip on a section of black ice on your driveway, they may hold you responsible for their injuries. If you’re found to be negligent and have to cover costs for the damage (e.g. paying for the third party’s medical costs), then your home insurance would cover these costs for you.

Some form of liability coverage should be included with a basic home insurance policy but, as with any other type of insurance policy, this can still depend on the insurance provider at hand.
